Don't Let the Flu Get You

With the winter season well and truly upon us, now is the time to concentrate on strengthening your  immune system in order to prevent cold and flu. Foods such as garlic, ginger, thyme, parsley, lemongrass and chillies are great additives to meals. Also, shitake and reishi mushrooms, available in most Asian supermarkets.

Essential oils such as Tea Tree and Eucalyptus are great in diffusers due to their antibacterial properties. These are also fantastic oils to inhale during a cold to prevent secondary bacterial infections of the sinuses and chest.

Herbs are nature’s best defense against viruses. The best to supplement with include Echinacea, Andrographis and Olive leaf which can be used to prevent viruses taking hold, but also taken during illness to reduce the severity and duration.

Other useful supplements include Zinc and high doses of vitamin C. Symptomatic relief for sore throats can
be achieved by using Mediherb herbal throat spray and lozenges such as Bioglan Throat Clear. It is  important to keep water intake high to flush the lymphatic system. Try adding a squeeze of lemon juice
to further enhance immune function.

Exercise is also excellent for stimulating the immune system along with adequate sleep and relaxation. If you do become unwell remember to gets lots of rest and cover your mouth during coughs or sneezes to prevent spreading bugs.
