Podiatry

Friendlies Chemist Subiaco is proud to offer podiatry services every Friday.

Our podiatrist, James Popescu has worked in both the private and public health sectors in Perth, with exposure to a diverse range of lower limb and foot complaints.

Podiatry consultations include:

  • Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the lower limb
  • Management of common conditions of the lower limb, including:
    • Plantar heel pain
    • Hammer toes
    • Bunions
    • Ingrown toenails
    • Forefoot pain
    • Corns and callouses
    • Nail conditions and plantar warts
  • Prescription, manufacture and adjustment of customized shoe inserts (ie. orthoses/orthotics)
  • Diabetic neurovascular foot assessments (ie. screening of high-risk patients in order to help prevent serous complications)
  • Paediatric complaints such as bowed legs, pigeon toes and flat feet
  • Sports injury management, eg. knee pain, shin splints and ankle sprains
  • Advice regarding appropriate footwear selection

What is involved in a podiatry consultation?

At your first session, the podiatrist will gather information relevant to your presenting complaint or reason for seeking treatment. This initial assessment may include detailed history, taking a physical examination of your alignment and joint mobility, and/or visual analysis of your walking technique (gait). Often, a recommendation will be provided regarding the suitability of your footwear and other potential inhibiting factors.

The podiatrist will then develop and implement a treatment plan – which may include recommending a specific exercise program and/or certain products or mechanical appliances. Where necessary, the podiatrist may also refer you to other health professionals for further assessment.

Do I need a referral?

Ordinarily, a medical referral is NOT required to access podiatry services. However, James is registered to service the following specialized groups of clients:
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) gold card holders (who have a current referral from their GP)
  • Patients referred through the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care program (please see your GP to determine if you are eligible).
Furthermore, private health fund rebates are available to eligible clients.

Interesting foot facts

The human foot is a very complex structure, comprising the following features:
  • An astonishing 26 bones (52 between both feet – or a quarter of the bones in the entire human body!)
  • An astounding 33 joints of varying functional importance
  • Numerous tendons and ligaments, with four layers of muscle in the sole of the foot alone!
  • Multiple nerves, arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.
The human foot is a highly-intuitive mobile adaptor, capable of adjusting to very subtle variances in terrain. Given this fact, it is easy to appreciate how disabling and debilitating lower limb problems can be. Moreover, it is important to realize that many chronic diseases (including diabetes mellitus) have a negative impact on lower limb health.
